Description of Crimson Skies Windows

Crimson Skies is a title which you may love for the game it tries to be more than for the game it is. A cross between Red Baron and Star Wars: X-Wing, Crimson Skies puts you in the role of a daring air pirate, leading his crew to booty and glory.

The world-building in Crimson Skies is exceptional. Based on the tabletop game from FASA, CS aims to recapture the feel of aeronautics adventure pulps with a dystopian sci-fi twist. The mission briefings are filled with a colorful cast of quirky pirate companions and are intentionally reminiscent of old radio serials. While you’ll grow sick of a few of the canned lines during the missions themselves (“looks like you’ve got them all hot and bothered!”), the voice acting is top-notch and fun overall.

CS does have issues, both technical and gameplay. The original release was very buggy, but even with fixes, there are problems (the loading screen on the patched version flashes rapidly and could trigger epilepsy). CS has a screwy sense of scale that makes it more difficult than it should be. CS puts a focus on barnstorming and stunt-flying, demanding you do WWI-style trick flying stunts with planes the size of WW2 bombers. Not intentionally, of course; you’re supposedly flying nimble single-seaters, except the model sizes are drastically off when compared to the bridges, tunnels, and buildings you’re flying around. Ground textures are scaled to create illusions of flying high over buildings, but your plane’s model may be bigger than a residential block, so it can be difficult to tell just how close you are to the ground.

Aug 13, 2020 Download the Crimson Skies FOV Fix (This download includes CSFix and corrects the FOV to work with any aspect ratio). Extract to the installation folder. Optional: Edit csfix.ini to use a resolution other than your native resolution. If running on Windows 10, ensure that the Windows features are also enabled under 'Turn Windows Features On and off'. Download Crimson Skies Update for Windows to solve issues and improve performance, multiplayer, and stability of the game.

Crimson Skies was a fun, silly game. I remember it took me like 100 tries to beat the mission where you have to rescue the guy off the train or the one where you had to do the stunt course. Anyways, sorry about your compatibility. Those suck big time. If only every game worked easily. First 13 Original Xbox Games Announced for Xbox One Compatibility. Jun 15, 2017-20. Surprise Kingdom Hearts 3 Trailer. Have you played Crimson Skies?

While the game gives you the ability to skip levels, you may keep trying in your frustration because you WANT to be able to do it. Just like you’ll want to love Crimson Skies, but it can be hard to do so.

The v1.02 on the site right now works perfectly, however, is there any way to set the resolution to anything higher than 640x480? Also, I have selected the 'joystick+keyboard' control option but my joystick doesn't work in-game. dinput.dll or something is there to address that?

How many missions are there? What is the purpose of Crimson Skies?

Harry2020-08-280 point

@XSYNTRK, the install options they're referring to appear after your click on Setup.exe and follow through the installation steps. You'll have the option to install just the essential files or 'all game files, movies and Scrapbook items to the hard drive', which is the recommended one.

The 'ISO Version 1.02 with fix' has been working flawlessly so far on a Windows7 x64 machine.
Just a heads up: there is an extremely loud dialog during the installation. Thank god I had taken off my earphones, otherwise my eardrums would've exploded.

helpme2020-08-24-9 points

can you help me to play crimson skies in windows 10? What do I have to do? I already download ISO Version 1.02 with fix English version 496 MB. But what is the next step? When I run Crimson skies again, the game still did not started.

Cortezic2020-08-190 point

I continued to get 'Error: Failed to Initialize Video' after adjusting graphic settings to 4:3 ratio.
The game worked after switching the 'Crimson.exe' compatibility properties to Windows 95.

Xsyntrk2020-08-15-2 points

I mounted the image and extracted the files (downloaded the ISO 1.02 version) to a folder and click on SETUP to install it but it says the setup could not read the specific resource dll to even set it up. I'm running on Windows 10. I know how the rest of the process works, but it can't even set it up to install the game. Is this because of Direct X? Maybe i need to setup the directx in the directX folder in this ISO download? Also in the read me file what does 'Tick INSTALL' mean? Why doesn't it just say install the game from the Setup.exe file?

Netghost2020-08-061 point

I don't have a custom video setting option. For my primary video I only get 640, 800, 1024 options. Loading image color is off, but main menu and game has good quality BUT menus are 1/3 of the screen and gameplay the screen is stretched 3x bigger than my actual screen (so the plane is barely visible in the bottom right).
How do I fix this?

Potentially Important Note!
If you are getting 'error: failed to initialize video' crash when launching the game make sure that you set your custom resolution to a 4:3 aspect ratio!
When I left it alone it crashed. When I set it 2560x1440 it crashed. When I set it to 1920x1440 it launched and ran perfectly at that resolution.
Use this calculator if you are unsure what width you need to set https://calculateaspectratio.com/ by selecting 4:3 and the pixel height of your monitor.

Instructions unclear. Virtual CloneDrive doesn't work. Daemon Tools doesn't work. Nothing but a useless .bin file that says the game isn't installed on the device.

Long time whitout see it, its a very hot-fighting game, thanks

Iffy3502018-09-173 points

In my opinion High Road to Revenge doesn't exist. I never liked that the PC version was never as popular as that Xbox game. It's a real shame that this IP is dead. It needs a reboot ASAP.

For anyone wondering about which files to apply first:
- After installing the game, apply the 1.02 patch.
- Make a backup copy of the original exe for good measure, then overwrite CRIMSON.EXE with the one from the csfix patch (also add the csfix dll and ini files into the Crimson Skies folder).
- You don't need the no cd crack because the csfix exe already has the safedisc protection removed.
- Open csfix.ini and edit parameters as you see fit. (Beware that aspect ratios other than 3:4 will have stretching.)
- When you run the game, choose Accelerator for the video device.
If you don't know what to do with the iso:
Install a program such as Virtual CloneDrive. When that's done, right click the iso file and click Mount. Install the game as you see fit, then right click the iso again and Unmount it. (You may have to leave it mounted while you replace crimson.exe, though.)

Question2018-08-17-2 points

Do I apply both the patch and the fix?
In what order?

trigun2018-07-12-1 point

Iso and Patch files did not pick up malware. I say they are safe to use.
NoCD and Fix files seem okay but not 100% on them. be careful and check yourself.

teccanina2018-06-251 point

Use daemon tools to install it!

Overview

Nathan Zachary, gentleman air pirate and leader of the Fortune Hunters, is back at it again. Romancing the ladies and downing privateers is no trouble for this man of adventure, especially when his gang of dangerous rogues backs him!

Crimson Skies is the story of Nathan Zachary and the Fortune Hunters, a band of air pirates in a alternate version of 1930’s America. The United States has fractured into many small states and the federal plans for a highway and rail transportation system lay unused. America has fallen into a deep depression and the economy has faltered from the lack of reliable trade.

In response, people have taken to the air and the zeppelin has become the in-country freighter of choice. With their massive payloads and the advantage of air travel, they can transport supplies to wherever they’re needed. Thieves and cutthroats haven’t ignored the advances in aeronautics either, as marauding bands of pirates take to the skies to steal cargo from unwary transport captains. Along with the rogues come legitimate air security firms and state militia, mobilizing their own attack squadrons to repel the pirate threat.

Gameplay, Controls, Interface

An extremely accurate and detailed flight simulation, it isn’t. However, bad grammar aside, Crimson Skies is still a joyous romp into the skies of an alternate 1930’s America and the game makes no excuses regarding its unrealistic and somewhat fanciful view of airplane handling. Performing an immelman loop is nearly as easy as making a banking turn and the learning curve for a new pilot is not very demanding. In some flight games, these features could be seen as a negative, a strike against the designers, but not so in Crimson Skies.

Without a doubt, what will grip you first is the ease of piloting. Banking, looping, and diving all become easy with this forgiving interface and you’ll hardly ever have to deal with the problem of a stalled motor. Guns and rockets abound, spitting defeat at your enemies by the barrel load. In some missions, you’ll even get the chance to leap out of your plane and capture an enemy aircraft. You don’t get to control your pilot as he does this of course, but the thrill is the same nonetheless.

Graphics

By far the best aspect of Crimson Skies is gameplay. Trailing not far behind are the graphics, with wonderfully detailed and unique designs for aircraft, vivid models of zeppelins and similar airships, and an overall sense of design that amazes the eye. Explosions, model detail, and environment are all rendered wonderfully, providing a detailed and interesting environment in which to fly.

I couldn’t let this review pass without congratulating the Crimson Skies team on translating the bizarre and amazing designs of Crimson Skies aircraft into the digital environment. The first time you see a Hughes Bloodhawk sweep out of the sky towards you, something just feels right in the world and it continues to feel right as you rain a hail of lead into the Bloodhawk’s airframe.

Audio

Voice acting for Crimson Skies is well done, but not spectacular. The characters are slightly over the top, especially on the part of some of the mercenaries and militia members you encounter.

The soundtrack is mildly entertaining, but far too short, leaving the bad taste of repetition in my mouth. Triumphant and blustery, this aspect of the game could’ve used more work. As an added disappointment, the engine that Crimson Skies runs is prone to performance issues related to sound.

System Requirements

PII 266mhz, 8MB 3D Video Card (for 3D graphics), 4x CD-ROM, Win95/98/ME/2K, and 32MB RAM (64 for W2K, 96MB for Multiplayer).

Reviewed On: AMD K6/2 400mhz, Win98, 64MB RAM, 4GB HD, Diamond Viper V700U, Creative Labs Soundblaster AWE 64, and a 24x CD-ROM

Cool Feature

The campaign included with Crimson Skies was built with an eye to acrobatics and wild stunts. On nearly every mission there are areas you can fly under, around, through, and within. As a bonus to the player, completing one of these challenging stunts earns you a photo and news article, earning you extra cash to equip your crew with.

Documentation

Windows 10 Compatibility Test

Well in keeping with the theme of Crimson Skies, the documentation is littered with advertisements and national propaganda, lending to the mystique of an adventurous air pirate.

Bottom Line

Crimson Skies Windows 10 Compatibility Chart

While suffering from some initial problems with a repetitive soundtrack and audio related performance issues, Crimson Skies makes up for it with strong and unique gameplay, detailed graphics, and a 1930’s feeling that just won’t quit. All of you Rocketeer fans out there better sit up and take notice, this is the closest you’ll ever get.
